The longer version:
I don’t hate social media. I’ve made friendships and met partners on social media. I’ve built brands and made money and landed jobs via social media. I love that Instagram brings me endless pictures of cute animals and amazing dancers and local food and cute butts. Facebook has given me local connections that developed into in-person community. Twitter, believe it or not, was once a delight.
I’m no puritan either. I don’t have to divest myself from billionaire algorithms in order to be ethically sound or spiritually healthy. Our solidarities and resistances will always spring up in the cracks of existing systems.
But one day I realized that social media was stealing my most precious resource. More dear than money, or time: my attention energy. My limited daily budget of headspace. With every food photo or workout celebration I posted, I was getting waylaid by half an hour of attention-draining scroll.
As an over-leveraged solo dad and caregiver, I can’t afford having my tiny daily allotment of attention leeched away. So, I’ve put my personal social media into a semi-mothballed state. And I revived avdi.org. Welcome [back] to my home page on the World Wide Web. Let’s party like it’s 1999.
I invite you—if not to flee with me—than at least to get some postcards from my exodus.
